| 7-29-08 Tuna and shark scouting Had the weather window and a free day so my friend and I decided to head out to Platts Bank to look for tuna and do a little shark fishing. We ran 40 miles out and saw birds, bait, and whales but no surface tuna. Halfway out we did see a 5’ blue shark nosing a piece of seaweed on the surface. We arrived at the bank and decided to try the new Lucanos jigs from Shimano for some ground fish first. Had good action right away and brought up some nice cod and haddock. The jigs worked best with minimal or no jigging of the rod. As we get into some nice cod, I have a good one on and as it gets close I looked down and notice there is way too much color for what I am reeling up. An 8’ blue shark is mouthing my cod as it comes to the surface. We did not even have any chum in the water, good sign. We rig up a shark rod with bait and put it out. The blue takes it right away and john brings him boat side for a quick release. Now we put the chum in the water and soon have 6-8 blue sharks milling around the boat. Now I mean right around the boat with them mouthing the engine, rubbing against the hull, and chewing on the chum bag. After we caught a few we decided to keep a baited hook in the cooler and wait for a mako or threasher. While we waited we were treated to a cool whale show with multiple pods of whales cruising by with some humpbacks breaching. John tried out his new waterproof camera and got some cool photos. No makos or tuna and headed home before dark.
