| 7-19-08 Dogfish research tagging tournament Port Harbor Marine hosted a dogfish-tagging tournament to gather data on the plague known as spiny dogfish. They are highly protected yet what we see on the water contradicts the statistics the biologists list in support of the restrictions. Each boat was provided with 50 tags and a data sheet to record location, sex, length, time, method, and any other species that were landed. We tag 50 dogfish in approximately 2.5 hours with only 1 cod, 1 redfish, and one sculpin as by catch. One glaring contradiction (other than the lack of dogfish) was the biologist’s assessment that males outnumber females 10-1. Our first 40 dogfish were females before we brought in a male, which we named Hugh Hefner. In total we tagged 48 females and only 2 males, which was mirrored by all the other participants. It was a lot of fun and a great grassroots movement by the local fishermen. |
